French Press Tips & Tricks

Updated: Apr 8, 2021

Have you ever been overwhelmed by all the choices you have when it comes to brewing methods? Me too. But I’ve been able to experiment over the years and learn about each method which has helped me decided that using a French press is by far my favorite way to brew coffee. It’s simple, quick, easy to clean up, and it tastes way better than using an electric brewer in my opinion.

So, how do you brew coffee using a French press? It might look intimidating if you’re not familiar with it, so here’s some tips if you’re a newbie or even a veteran that seeks the elusive perfect cup of coffee.

  • Use filtered water

    • This is super important for any time you brew coffee. Unfiltered water will drastically change the flavor, and even texture, of your coffee. If you’re taking the time to invest in good coffee, use good water.

  • Buy a good grinder

    • Grind size and consistency also plays a big role in the flavor of your coffee. When using a French press, your coffee grounds should be medium-course, about the size of sea salt. To achieve this, you’ll need a good grinder that can give you a consistent grind size.

  • Use a scale

    • If you’re experiencing coffee that’s too bitter or too acidic, this will be a big help in identifying why. By measuring the amount of coffee grounds you’re ensuring you have the perfect recipe for optimal extraction.

  • Use hot water, not boiling

    • You’re looking for water that’s 195-205 degrees Fahrenheit. If it’s too hot you’ll burn the coffee and over-extract, if it’s too cold you’ll under-extract. Also, swirl some hot water in the French press and pour it out before starting the brewing process to warm up the container.

  • Bloom!

    • Letting the coffee bloom isn’t just for pour overs! You should use the same practice when using a French press. Pour enough hot water over the grounds and swirl it around just enough to saturate. Let it rest for 30 seconds then add the rest of the water.

Now that you have all the tips, it’s time to try it yourself!

Steps to Brew Coffee Using a French Press

  1. Heat up water

  2. While the water heats up, measure and grind your coffee

  3. Pour a small amount of water in the brewer, swirl it around to heat it up, and pour it out

  4. Put coffee grounds in the french press

  5. Pour just enough water to saturate the grounds, swirl it and let it sit for about 30 seconds

  6. Pour in the rest of the water

  7. Wait 3 and a half minutes (4 minutes total with the bloom), plunge and pour your coffee!
